The Origin of..

The Peranakans

From as early as the 16th Century, the Malay Peninsula was part of globalization. Its strategic position and vast natural resources enabled the region to become one of the most vibrant maritime routes possible.

Some of the non-native ethnic groups that had settled down at the Malay peninsula got married to local people. As a result, new communities and new generations of social amalgamation emerged.

The word Peranakan eventually became the reference to highly localized non-native culture. Arising from the word "anak," in the Malay, meaning child.
